MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF UMALUSI

Umalusi, Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, wishes all the Grade 12 learners who will be writing their final examinations in November the best of luck. It is important for you to reach your full potential, and achieving good National Senior Certificate results will give you plenty of options to pursue your career aspirations.

I trust that you have been studying hard throughout the year and, now that the exams have arrived, I wish you the best of luck!

If you have any last minute questions about the examinations, please speak to your teachers and parents. Young people thrive on the right support and the encouragement of parents, guardians and relatives. Their support can make the difference between exam success or failure. On a practical note, don’t forget to take all your documents with you to the exam and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the exam centre.

The following brief study habits could be of assistance:

  • Buy an extra note book for each subject and write notes and summaries in that book as you finish a chapter in class
  • Learn how to make mind maps, cluster maps and other memory aids. Mind maps are graphical illustrations of a subject and a great memory tool to use, especially during exams.
  • Choose your study time and stick to it to develop strong study skills. You want to choose the time of the day when you feel most alert, not when your brain is likely to be fuzzy and tired. Then be consistent, studying at this time every day.
  • Do not panic on exam day. On the night before the exam and in the morning read through your notes a few times. Do not stress, it makes your mind work more slowly.
  • Develop a positive attitude towards exams. If you are well prepared you’ll walk into the exam room thinking “WOW! I can’t wait to prove myself to these examiners, I’m gonna ace this test, just to show them”.

Good luck!

Goodwill message from
KZN MEC Senzo Mchunu

A total of 141 315 Grade 12 learners have registered for the National Senior Certificate examination this year. For us as a Department, these are not just statistics. They are sons and daughters whose families expect a lot from. In some cases, these are people who have become the only hope of their families coming out of poverty. Some families spent their last cents just to see their sons and daughter passing matric so that they can contribute to the family’s welfair.

The learners who will be writing matric this year are also expected by the Republic of South Africa, to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country. Through them we want to tackle the challenge of skills shortage that has bedeviled this country for quite some time . We expect that out of them artisans, engineers, mathematicians, astronomers and all manner of scarce skills are going to emerge.

This is the reason why as a Department we have focused all our energies in ensuring that the matric class of 2009 does much better than that one of 2008. On the 27th of August the Department held a special meeting with all the stakeholders including educator unions, examination officials, district managers, subject advisors and circuit managers to analyze the performance of Grade12 learners in the first and second term assessment tests.

This was part of the comprehensive Matric Intervention Plan which was started by the Department in conjunction with educator unions in the province. As part of this plan, we also assist struggling schools, especially those who obtained less than 60% pass rate last year. The twinning and clustering of schools is assisting tremendously. It enables educators to share ideas and learners can also assist one another.

The Department is also distributing CD’s and DVD’s to schools as well as study mates to all Grade 12 learners across the province. We have also started the sms line for Grade 12 learners to send through questions relating to exam issues. The sms line number 33600. To send question, learners must send the question with a prefix: QUE followed by the question.

All of this is done to ensure that all learners who registered for matric this year succeed. As a Department we are going beyond the call of duty to see to it that the class of 2009 performs much better than that of 2008.

We would like to wish all those who will be writing matric everything of the best – Good Luck. Remember, there is no substitute for hard work and determination.

MOSES KOTANE INSTITUTE
Rural G12 Math and Science intervention in Sisonke and Obonjeni

The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI), a South African national liberation venture in technology and political science, is a new institute of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism. In line with the national government objective of a developmental state, the premise for the establishment of the MKI is to enhance economic development through science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills of the current and future workforce, including all levels of government officials through focused programmers.

The MKI intervention will take place in selected schools in the Obonjeni and Sisonke districts. The intervention focuses on the Grade 12 Math and Science curricula, and has two components:

For learners: a series of Saturday workshops with a ‘bootcamp’ for 1000 Math and Science learners in Grade 12, as part of a Matric Survival Kit.

For educators: participation in a Train the Trainers programme, to upskill 100 Math and Science teachers in selected parts of the G12 National Curriculum statements.
