  The Nature of the Communities of the Target Readership

KZN12 services the entire province of KwaZulu-Natal.  Whilst it thus services all communities, the following aspects are of importance:

1.
Jurisdiction of service provision to educational communities:

Ø      Urban schools (approximately 30% readership);

Ø      Rural schools (approximately 70% readership);

2.  Main benefactors of publication are the learners from the historically disadvantaged communities:

Whilst all Grade 12 learners are faced with many challenges and the inherent pressures of the matric year these ‘disadvantaged’ learners often also have to deal with various inherited difficulties, viz:

Ø      language discrepancies/barriers;

Ø      varying subject standards;

Ø      lack of educators;

Ø      lack of text books and other resource material;

Ø      living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, etc.

One of the basic socio-economic limitations is that of a dire lack of basic funding to provide for the essential schooling resources, hence the inability to purchase textbooks and additional study aids. Paid Publisherswhich carry matric supplements are not readily and easily accessible to all grade 12 learners.  It is in this light that KZN12: Cutting Edge Learning, is provided free of charge as an extended learning tool / information source and a regular educational publication, designed for matriculants. KZN12 comprises of deliberate and useful information intended to empower these learners for Grade 12 and their subsequent lives in the years ‘beyond matric’.

It is of consequence that the greater school community (the educators, principal, School Governing Body, parents and siblings) form major determining factors in the performance of the Grade 12 Learner. Very little or no educational resource material is freely available to them. These communities are in dire need of education that would empower them to make more conducive the learning environment for learners in general, and for the Grade 12 learner in particular. KZN12 thus attempts to create a holistically-educated learner, capable of contributing towards the growth of South Africa to become a 1st world nation.
